President's"New Way Forward" Iraq Strategy is Staying the CourseLast evening President Bush announced his new Iraq strategy to the American people and called it a "new way forward." Instead, the President is staying the course and ignoring the will of the American people. "How is it a 'new way forward' when the policies are exactly the same and the troop levels are increased?" asked David Euchner, chairman of the Pima County Libertarian Party. Euchner continued: "This President is thoroughly incapable of comprehending the level of failure that his policies have created in the Middle East. He still believes that the American armed forces are liberating Iraq, when it is patently obvious to everyone else that this is now an occupying force. As with the Romans 2,000 years ago, and with the English 200 years ago, occupying forces are always resented and they always become the target of attacks from within the occupied nation." Euchner challenged the new leadership in Congress to take a firm stand against the President. "Bush has once again ridiculed those who disagree with him as 'cut-and-runners'. Bush will continue to send more and more brave Americans to die abroad rather than admit the failure of his policy. Not even the overwhelming loss of Republican control of Congress has opened the President's eyes to reality. Bush will never listen to reason. The only reasonable response to the President's plan is for the Democrats in Congress to cut off funding for the war and force the President to bring the troops home." "We already have over 130,000 soldiers in Iraq, away from their families risking their lives not for the security of the United States but instead for the President's pride," added Bennett Kalafut, first vice chairman of the PCLP. "Neither an additional twenty thousand nor an additional two hundred thousand will change the nature of their mission to the defense of the United States. Meanwhile, every day they're over there, the government builds a debt burden for future generations. Democrats in Congress ought to immediately end this drain on our current and future economy and waste of lives, and take steps to prevent American soldiers from ever being needlessly placed in harm's way again."
